The invention is applicable to the field of traffic management and provides a traffic light optimizing system and method based on the ultra-wideband wireless positioning technology. The traffic light optimizing system comprises an electronic license plate, at least three base stations and a traffic light optimizing server, wherein the electronic license plate is attached to a vehicle and used for transmitting ultra-wideband pulse signals; the at least three base stations are arranged along the roadside, synchronously connected with one another and used for receiving the ultra-wideband pulse signals and uploading the time when the ultra-wideband pulse signals are received; the traffic light optimizing server is used for, according to a positioning algorithm and the times uploaded by every base station when the ultra-wideband pulse signals are received, generating the real-time coordinate of the electronic license plate, according to the real-time coordinate of the electronic license plate and a prestored traffic intersection coordinate range, positioning a traffic intersection where the vehicle is located, measuring out the number of vehicles passing by the intersection per second and obtaining the number of vehicles entering a waiting area of the traffic intersection per second in real time, and according to the number of the vehicles passing by per second and the number of the vehicles in the waiting area, optimizing the time duration of the traffic light in the traffic intersection. The traffic light optimizing system and method based on the ultra-wideband wireless positioning technology can reduce exhaust gas emission of vehicles.
