This project developed an automated railroad wheel profile inspection system at operating speeds using a laser scanning technology. Specifications and hardware design of the system including layout and component specifications were developed. Several laser sensors were tested on actual railroad wheel segments to determine the overall feasibility of the approach. A bench-scale inspection system was designed, assembled and tested in the laboratory. This was followed by in-house trials in simulated railroad conditions to further evaluate the system's operational durability and reliability. An operating design of the system for use in routine transit operations has been provided in the report.
