The following method steps are performed: the at least one electric machine (10, 20) is operated in generator mode. The occurrence of an "emergency braking" event is communicated to the battery management system (34) of at least one battery (32) having a high state of charge; the operating mode of the at least one battery (32) having a high state of charge is changed by the battery management system (34) in such a way that, during the "emergency braking" event, the at least one battery (32) having a high state of charge is operated with currents and voltages that go beyond those that are present with normal operation of the at least one battery (32) having a high state of charge. Alternatively, the current generated in the generator mode of the at least one electric machine (10, 20) is converted into heat in at least one brake shunt (40).
