An electronic control unit of a hybrid electric vehicle including an engine and an electric motor, which are power sources for traveling, and a torque converter with a lockup clutch provided in a power transmission path between the electric motor and a pair of drive wheels, is capable of switching between automatic driving and manual driving traveling, and controls the engagement and disengagement of the lockup clutch LU in accordance with a predetermined engagement and disengagement condition during BEV traveling and during manual driving traveling, and brings the lockup clutch LU into engagement during BEV traveling and during automatic driving traveling.
