To enable a vehicle detection accuracy to be improved with a simpler system configuration.SOLUTION: In a vehicle detector 1, an image input unit 11 receives an input of images 20A and 20B that are imaged, in a target area 100 including the adjacent lanes of a first lane 101 and a second lane 102, from the side of the first lane 101. A detection unit 121 detects, by processing the images 20A and 20B, a target vehicle 3C running on the first lane 101 and the second lane 102. A provisional determination unit 122 determines provisionally whether the target vehicle 3C represents one vehicle or two vehicles based on the full width W1 of the target vehicle 3C detected by the detection unit 121. When the provisional determination unit 122 provisionally determines that the target vehicle 3C is two vehicles, an identification unit 124 identifies whether the target vehicle 3C is one vehicle or two vehicles based on its relative position to other vehicles 3D and 3E running subsequently to the target vehicle 3C on the second lane 102.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
