A means of controlling a vehicle including detecting a vehicle users foot movement; determining the users intention based on that movement and setting the vehicle to manual mode if it is determined that the user wishes to take control of the vehicle. Pedals 25 have a proximity sensor 30 and may have multiple sensors on the top, bottom, left and right edges of the pedal. User intention is determined by evaluating the minimum threshold (MT fig.7) over a predetermined period of time (PT fig.7) and fluctuation (PF fig.7) of the sensor outputs; a normal takeover is effected using a manual control request. An emergency takeover may be determined if the gradient of the signal rise is sufficiently steep in which case a manual control request is not required. Ambiguous foot movement may actuate a light in the foot-well.
