Data is collected 110, 115 during operation of a first vehicle and it is determined that a confidence assessment of the data indicates a fault condition (e.g. a sensor fault). A communication 112 indicating the fault condition is sent to a second vehicle and an autonomous operation of the first vehicle is determined from data received in response. The V2V communications may be via Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) or visual light emissions. The autonomous operation may be lane keeping, maintaining a speed, pulling into the side of the road or stopping the first vehicle. The received data may be an operating instruction for the first vehicle or a location of one of the second vehicle, a third vehicle, an obstacle or a lean on a roadway. Alternatively an autonomous operation affected by the fault condition is discontinued and a second autonomous operation that is unaffected by the fault condition is continued.
