An autonomous robot 110 has a propulsion system of rechargeable batteries 115, a motor 116 and wheels 117. It also has charging connectors 114 and a Light Detection and Ranging, LIDAR, sensor (113). The autonomous robot 110 uses the LIDAR sensor 113 to assist in guiding the robot 110 to a docking or charging station 120. The docking station 120 has a marker or pattern 123 which is scanned and detected by the LIDAR sensor 113 to determine a relative position between the charging station 120 and the robot 110. The robot 110 uses this information to guide itself to the charging station 120.
