A magnetic levitation apparatus includes a movable carriage 1 with a first magnetic array 30 mounted to the carriage. A track 2 comprising a track surface (46, figure 2) and at least one channel 4,6 located below the track surface within which the carriage is housed. Drive means 26a,28a are arranged to propel the carriage within the channel. A levitation device 34 includes a magnetic element that is acted upon by the first magnetic array 30. The levitation device is located above the track surface and the first and second magnetic elements are arranged to levitate the levitation device above the track surface and to magnetically couple the levitation device to the carriage such that movement of the carriage within the channel causes corresponding movement of the levitation device above the track surface. Movement of the carriage in the channel of the track thereby propels the levitation device above the track surface. The levitation device may be a model or toy vehicle.
