The invention relates to a method for autonomously parking a motor vehicle (1) in a parking space (4), and to the motor vehicle (1) for carrying out the method. The method comprises: during travel of the motor vehicle (1), capturing (S1) sensor data (20) describing the surroundings of the motor vehicle (1) by means of a sensor device (7) of the motor vehicle (1), and detecting a free parking space (4) by applying a parking-space detection criterion (21) to the sensor data (20) captured; determining (S3) a starting position map (15) for the free parking space (4) detected, wherein the starting position map (15) comprises a plurality of possible starting position zones (16) in the surroundings of the detected parking space (4) for a single-move parking maneuver (12) into the free parking space (4) detected; checking (S4) whether the motor vehicle (1) is located in one of the starting position zones (16) of the starting position map (15) determined; and, if this is the case, carrying out (S6) the single-move parking maneuver (12) in order to autonomously park the motor vehicle (1) in the detected parking space (4).
