The present invention relates to a method for determining a position of a non-vehicle object in a vehicle (10). The method involves a reference depth map being recorded using a recording apparatus (11). For image points in a capture range (13), the reference depth map indicates a respective piece of distance information between the recording apparatus (11) and a surface of an object at the respective image point while the non-vehicle object is not located in the capture range (13). Further, a current depth map is recorded using the recording apparatus (11) while the non-vehicle object is located in the capture range (13). For image points in the capture range (13), depth differences are determined and the position of the non-vehicle object is determined on the basis of the depth differences.
