The invention relates to a method for optimizing the energy consumption of a motor vehicle comprising a battery (30), a heat engine (M), an electric machine (ME), a plurality of devices, and a computer (40) capable of controlling the heat engine (M) and the electric machine (ME), each of which is distinguished by at least one state variable, said method being characterized in that it comprises the following steps: a) defining a predicted period; b) determining the maximum theoretical change of each state variable in the prediction period; c) determining a range of applicable setpoints, wherein each setpoint value is selected such that the variation of each state variable conforms to its maximum theoretical variation; and d) determining a value of the hot setpoint and a value of the electrical setpoint for which the Hamiltonian function is lowest within the range of applicable setpoints.
