The application relates to a system for monitoring the loss of a brake pad of a motor vehicle, in which the motor vehicle comprises a brake device acting on each wheel of the motor vehicle, said brake device having a pad that is non-rotatable relative to the wheel but is linearly movable parallel to the axis of rotation of the wheel, the motor vehicle further comprises a hydraulic brake driving device and a brake fluid storage tank in fluid communication with the hydraulic brake driving device, and the hydraulic brake driving device is provided with a brake piston capable of moving linearly so as to act on the friction plates to generate brake force aiming at the wheels. The method comprises the following steps of: stably stopping the motor vehicle in a horizontal or approximately horizontal posture; the current liquid level in the brake fluid storage tank is determined; determining the volume variation of the brake fluid in the brake fluid storage tank based on a predetermined reference liquid level and the current liquid level; and under the condition that the wear thickness of the friction plate arranged for the front wheel or the rear wheel is known, the wear thickness of the friction plate arranged for the rear wheel or the front wheel is correspondingly determined by utilizing the volume variation of the brake fluid in the brake fluid storage tank and the diameter of a brake piston of the brake device.
