The invention relates to a method for operating a hydraulic brake device for a motor vehicle, comprising a brake disc that rotates with wheels and a brake lining that is non-rotatable relative to the brake disc but linearly displaceable parallel to the axis of rotation of the brake disc. Recording the time required for establishing the braking hydraulic pressure of the hydraulic braking device; and comparing the recorded time required for establishing the brake hydraulic pressure with the recorded time required for establishing the brake hydraulic pressure of the same hydraulic brake device under the condition that the brake friction plate is newly installed so as to determine the loss state of the brake friction plate.
