The invention discloses a ship main engine installation method. The method comprises the following steps: building a ship in a segmental way, and arranging a shelf above the main engine installation position of a ship engine room after the segmental total assembly phase of the engine room is finished, wherein a space for performing a wire-drawing irradiation procedure is formed between the shelf and the main engine installation position; hoisting a main engine into the engine room, and fixing the main engine on the shelf; performing building at a block erection phase; after completion of the block erection phase, performing the wire-drawing irradiation procedure below the shelf; after the end of the wire-drawing irradiation procedure, hoisting the main engine in the engine room; removing the shelf, laying the main engine down, and fixing the main engine in the engine room. According to the installation method, a detachable board is not reserved on a main deck, so that the influence of the detachable board can be ignored during lofting of an engine room piping system and a main cable below the main deck, the construction difficulty is lowered, and the docking time of a ship on a dock is saved; moreover, the installation time of outfitting pieces and upper-layer buildings above the main deck can be shortened.
