Vehicle-handling is dynamic response of vehicle to inputs applied by driver to steering gear, and can be considered as any combination of force and displacement inputs; from fundamental analysis parameter of control, designated Understeer Value, is evolved and its properties, namely, understeer, stability and yaw rate gain, and lateral acceleration gain are investigated; conflicting criteria of stability evolved from yaw rate gain and lateral acceleration gain suggest that degree of stability is complicated concept; actual vehicle is limited fundamentally by lateral acceleration, and it may therefore be that criterion of stability of lateral acceleration gain is more significant.
