In the ARIANE 5 program, Acoustic Emission (AE) has been used for qualification of several different composite structures. This paper demonstrates the capability of AE as a tool for quality control of the production of CFRP pressure vessels with metallic liner. The procedure has been applied on more than 30 vessels. The results show also the high reliability of the technics. The AE analysis was confirmed by failure test of one vessel. As a production test and for quality and safety purposes, AE is used to monitor the tank behaviour during the prestreching and as a data base to calculate the felicity ratio. During the proof test the onset of the AE activity and change of the slope (knee point) are real time monitored and the quasi felicity ratio as then calculated. These AE results are combined with all other measured mechanical parameters of the proof test.
