The improvement of performances and competitivity of satellite launchers implies a drastic decrease of structural coefficients for upper stages of the vehicles. That's why CNES decided to further the development of 'high performance structures' for the new generation of ARIANE Launchers. Preliminary studies and crude optimisation quickly led to choose sandwich structures with carbone-epoxy Face sheets for all the upper part of the launcher (Fairing, doublelaunch structure and vehicle equipment bay). This paper describes ARIANE 4 Launcher and its new structures; it briefly explains the logic their development. (Published as 'Materials Science Monographs', Vol. 29)
