In this paper are presented different composite parts of Ariane 5 launcher. Use of Composite Materials has been increased progressively during development of Ariane 1 to 5. Composite Materials have mainly been used on upper parts of the launcher where mass reduction has the highest influence on the launcher performance. Criteria of choice for materials and technologies are also reported. The driving parameter being 'the actual need', evolution of materials and technologies employed on Ariane has been limited, even for a new launcher such as Ariane 5. Qualification of technologies and of structural parts are also reported as well as related difficulties. Finally prospects of composite materials applications in launchers are discussed, from Ariane 5 evolutions to small launchers, as well as to future launcher concepts.
