Road surface roughness or irregularity is the main source of excitment to cause vibration of a moving vehicle, while the vibration effects the strength, duration and riding quality of motor vehicles. In order to calculate and predict the excitment acting on a moving vehicle under various road surface conditions, it is necessary to measure and calculate the roughness of various road surfaces statistically. The soft terrain spectrum is subdivided into three strands, i.e., the original spectrum, the effective spectrum and the rut spectrum. Accordingly, a device for measurement of all these spectra is developed. Based on its measuring results, a dynamic deformation model of the interaction between vehicle and soft terrain and another model of smoothing the enveloping profile of tyre contatct area on soft terrain are proposed for the further discussion of forming mechanism of soft terrain spectrum which dominates vehicle vibration.
