Recently AC motor is widely used in many electric vehicles. AC propulsion system has many advantages, such as ruggedness, inherent regenerative energy absorption, and compact size comparing with DC propulsion type. This paper proposes a new AC power train. In this system, 2 quadrant chopper is located between traction battery and propulsion inverter. Proposed system has three advantages. First, total battery voltage can be lowered for safety reason. Secondly, regenerative energy during decleration can be controlled. Thirdly, component of propulsion inverter can be optimized. Feasibility of proposed system is analyzed through simulation and design strategy is presented.
