The more advanced chopper control system for rolling stock, adopting the high power GTO and microcomputer control, has been developed. The new chopper system, for use in driving a separately-excited motor, takes full advantage of the most up-to-date electronic technology, achieving remarkably reduced size and weight and enhanced maintainability. In this paper are mainly described the following items. 1) Theory and features of this system; 2) GTO application technology for high frequency chopper; 3) Direct digital control by microcomputers; 4) Test results of this system.
