The future acceptance of electric vehicles will be substantially determined by the technical progress of electric drive systems for which the development of the batteries represents a key issue. Electric vehicle requirements are diverse and therefore a single battery system will not completely serve all markets. With this in mind, VARTA supports the strategy to provide the optimum battery systems for the different electric vehicle applications. This talk gives a general overview on the various battery systems that are under worldwide development with respect to their performance and availability. More specifically the status of the development and future aspects of the VARTA nickel metal-hydride and the VARTA Lithium-ion (SWING) system are discussed in comparison to other state of the art technologies.
