This paper describes an integrated skill- and knowledge-based system for autonomous highway vehicles. The purpose of this research is to realize an autonomous cruising system which works as an intelligent driver support system. First, a human driver behavior model is reviewed. This model is structured hierarchically from the skill-based behavior to the knowledge-based behavior of a human driver. As an analogy to this model, a framework for an integration of skill- and knowledge-based system for an autonomous cruising system is proposed. This integration makes it possible to realize a 'driving intelligence', which can cope with changing driving situations. A protoype of the integrated system was developed and its workability was confirmed by computer simulation. An experimental vehicle incorporating several driving programs was developed, and it showed the feasibility of driver support functions.
