Over eighty percent of civil aircraft accidents are attributable to pilot error, and at least half of all fatal 'pilot error' accidents involve poor pilot judgment error. However, flight training programs make virtually no attempt to teach judgment, although data indicate that explicit instruction in judgment improves pilot decision making. MIDIS is a PC-based, decision-training system which allows the student to 'fly' a cross-country instrument flight, making all the flight management decisions which determine the efficiency and safety of the operation. The formal structure of MIDIS is that of a 'graph transverser', in which the nodes of a branching structure are linked by transitional probabilities. Each node is a realistic in-flight situation referred to as a 'scenario'. The system models the chain of deteriorating circumstances which typifies the development of mishaps in complex multivariate decision-making contexts. A prime application of the system is to train students to break the chain. In addition, it has been developed as a research tool to facilitate the psychological study of in-flight decisions. Four such studies are summarized.
