Methods of using airborne simulator at National Aeronautical Establishment for handling qualities investigations of V/STOL aircraft and results of several test programs are outlined; influences of lateral-directional control cross-coupling on flying qualities, weathercock stability and dihedral effect on directional characteristics, and turbulence intensity in presence of various levels of weathercock stability are investigated; visual task undertaken by pilots included maneuvers in hover and forward flight while simulated steady wind and synthetic turbulence were introduced to produce realistic flight conditions.
