Vehicle stability and comfort give to suspension tuning a conflict in design criteria. Usually a stable vehicle with high performance in cornering and bad roads is not comfortable. For maximum ride comfort the suspension must be soft, or in other words, shock absorber damping forces must be small. In the best stability condition shock absorbers have higher damping forces. To solve this conflict usually the shock absorber is designed in order to give a compromise between these two conditions. In modern vehicles with high payload in respect to weight together with multiple use this compromise is very difficult. A variable damping suspension with shock absorbes with electromagnetic valves controlled by an electronic module is presented to provide the vehicle with two ride characteristics. The microprocessed logic, based on inputs from sensors, changes the vehicle suspension damping according the speed, brake or driver command.
