Cast iron disc brakes provide a challenge to the structural analyst. Their geometry is generally simple to model using Finite Elements, but to achieve accurate results requires a complex material model and an understanding of the causes of their potental structural failures. This paper details the techniques now available to achieve this aim and goes on to evaluate the contributions of the specific design features to the overall thermal perfomance.
