An All-Wheel Drive system is presented, based on an inter-axle differential, and electro-magnetic clutch and a microprocessor based control system. The system automatically adjusts the front to rear torque split to improve traction and vehicle stability. A vehicle handling strategy dynamically calculates a desired torque split, and the corresponding front-to-rear speed differences. A slip speed control loop applies the clutch to drive the measured slip speed to the desired value. Test data shows that the feedback loop is effective in controlling the front-to-rear speed difference.
