Hot rolled steel tubes of small and medium diameter are usually finished by stretch reducing. Crop losses due to end thickening are a main factor in the economics of this process. Besides the parameters of reduction, the mill design has an important influence on end thickening. The Three-Motor Variable Group Drive system gives the opportunity of a reliable Heavy End Control (HEC). The first three years of operation at FALCK's seamless tube plant show that, with this technology, stretch reducing of relatively short mother tubes is economical.
