A five-axis gantry robot performs scribing and drilling operations on aircraft master models. Part programs are generated off-line, utilizing data from a CAD model. The program instructs the robot to transport either a scribing end effector, for use in scribing a part outline on the surface of the master model, or a drill motor to drill a hole pattern in the surface. Tool setup is accomplished by using a tactile sensor to determine the position of the tool within the robot's workspace. Software transforms the part location into robot coordinates.
