Swissmetro is a project inspired by the landscape, population and legislation problems specific to Switzerland. The proposed solution is to construct a rapid underground transport system linking the major cities, with the tunnels under partial vacuum. Numerous electrotechnical innovations are required, including an electromagnetic guidance and lifting system, a variable frequency linear synchronous motor drive, noncontact transmission of energy to the vehicle, and energy distribution in the tunnels. Assembling these new technologies represents a challenge which should open the way for a new generation of high-performance, environmentally-friendly transport systems. An initial request for a pilot section is being presented to the Swiss government.
