New optical technologies which overcome chirping noise and fiber dispersion are required to realise large-capacity systems with long repeater spacing. The first 1.55 mu m 400 Mb/s bit-rate long-repeater-spacing system was based on low-loss 1.55 mu m zero-dispersion single-mode optical fiber, 1.55 mu m DFB-LD and InGaAs-APD. The basic design concept for a long-repeater-spacing optical transmission system is described. The configuration of a 1.55 mu m 400 Mb/s system is also described, and the applicability of 80 km repeater spacings for terrestrial systems and 120 km for non-repeatered undersea systems is shown.
