Describes the submerged optical repeater developed by Yokosuka Electrical Communication Laboratory for use in the FS-400M fiber optical submarine transmission system. The authors also present a S/N design overview including mode partition noise and design aging parameters, as well as the design and performance of monolithic repeater circuits and repeater housings. Furthermore they review the characteristics of the submerged optical repeater obtained during the deep-sea trial carried out in the Ogasawara trench in November, 1984.
