Describes the design and performance characteristics of the supervisory system controlling the FS-400M fiber optic submarine transmission system. This supervisory system utilizes the main signal loop-back technique and features repeater operating condition monitoring as well as standby laser diode switching. These functions are achieved through the proposed mark density-modulated/pulse width modulated signals, which are resistant to bit error rate degradation common in repeated transmission lines. The authors also present deep-sea tests which have confirmed excellent overall performance.
