A synchronous machine traction drive for an electric passenger car is described. The separately excited 20 kW salient pole machine is characterized by an efficiency of at least 92 % within a large torque-speed region and by a field-weakening range of approximately 4:1. Some design features and simulation results are given. The drive train is supplied by a NaS-battery.
