The aim of this paper is to design a simple, cheap and reliable drive system suitable for a battery supplied road vehicle. The proposed drive system is a 20 kW switched reluctance motor supplied from a simple converter circuit. This system has proved to compete very well with other conventional drive systems. Design details and simulated characteristics of the designed SR system are given and compared with those of a synchronous drive system of the same overall dimensions.
