The Sternol language is an application oriented language developed for the use in railway safety programs. The Sternol inference engine is designed as diversified programmed software, to fullfil the safety requirements set for railway systems. The real time and the safety requirements forced the authors in the mid 1970's to define a language of their own, a subset of FORTRAN. This has later (mid 1980's) been formalized and extended into the current definition of the language STERNOL. In 1988 a major program to enhance the programmers' environment was introduced, bringing the first tools on the SUN work station platform. The goal of the project is to: increase productivity; increase the quality, by easing inspections; to enable the safety verification without the target environment; to be able to document all tests, and the results, for inspection by safety approving authorities. The environment project has now (April 1991) reached its first mile stone, with a handfull of tools been used in customer projects for more than 6 months, and with one customer project used as a trial with the new methodology. The approval of the Sternol logic for use on-line is the result of a strict review of all documentation related to the system. The safety must be based on sound design from the top, to ensure that the implemented requirements are not a safety hazard by themself. The massive use of graphics is a good investment, as the risk of miss-interpretations is reduced.
