A train interlocking system 20 located onboard a rail vehicle 40 comprises vehicle readers 24a,b having respective fixed positions at a front and rear of the rail vehicle. As the first reader passes a fixed track location, it obtains associated information and sends - to a lineside server 12 - an indication that the track location is occupied by the rail vehicle. As the second reader passes the same track location it obtains associated information and sends an indication that the track location is unoccupied. Alternatively, in a trackside interlocking system, a lineside server receives - from an onboard train interlocking system - an indication that a track location is either occupied or unoccupied by the vehicle and changes the state of a process running on the server and uniquely associated with the track location accordingly. Alternatively, an onboard train interlocking system uses a vehicle beacon reader to read information associated with a trackside beacon, determines a recommended speed for the track location and displays it to a train driver.
