For air traffic control purposes, and in regions where most aircraft are transponder equipped, Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) has surpassed primary radar as the principal sensor. In addition to the measurement of aircraft range and bearing, SSR provides positive identification, height readout and freedom from the effects of weather and clutter. Ranges in excess of 200 miles can be readily achieved at substantially less cost than with primary radar. The reliance being placed upon SSR has generated demands for improved performance and remedies for the system deficiencies that the system experiences. These deficiencies can be summarised as poor azimuth accuracy, mutual interfernece, signal fades and false alarms. The solution to these problems lies with better antennas, monopulse direction finding and improved signal processing. The new generation equipment is a step towards the introduction of Mode S which will add an extended datalink capability.
