The Mode Select beacon system currently being developed for the US Federal Aviation Administration represents a significant step in the automation of air traffic control (ATC) within the US. The system will replace the current air traffic control radar beacon system (ATCRBS) providing improved aircraft positional accuracies, reduced levels of false targets, reduced mutual interference, and a ground-air-ground data link capability. The ground portion of the system of the system is the Mode S sensor which consists of a computer controlled interrogator, a data processor, and ground communication interfaces. The architectural and performance issues that were driving influences on the Mode S interrogator design are presented. Several key software algorithms germane to a monopulse ATCRBS secondary surveillance radar (SSR) are also discussed.
