Istituto Superiore P.T. and Soc. Pirelli Cavi S.p.A. have recently studied and developed a submarine cable structure for a characterization of mechanical and transmission performance both in factory and in a sea trial at a depth of 2500 m. This paper presents the results obtained in the experiment which gave useful informations for the future development of the Italian State Telephone Agency (A.S.S.T.) submarine optical cable network, the laying of which is planned to be started since this year.
