Three methods of splicing submarine optical fiber cables have been developed. These are a method of splicing high-strength arc-fusion fibers to enable the fabrication of long fibers, a splicing method using visual inspection of the core, and a method of terminating cable by calking and relaying current by friction-welded aluminium-copper parts. The authors describe these methods, as well as some equipment and tools developed to allow the quick assembly of a joint box on board. The results of a deep sea test are also presented.
