In this paper, the design of a hybrid-excited linear synchronous motor (LSM) for magnetically levitated (MAGLEV) vehicles is presented. The design parameters such as airgap length, magnet size, and input current are carefully chosen and the levitation and thrust characteristics are predicted using three-dimensional (3-D) finite-element analysis. A small maglev vehicle has been manufactured to validate the design and analysis of the hybrid-excited LSM.
