The long-stator type Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) transportation system with permanent magnet excitation for material handling is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The analysis method of thrust and attractive force is studied and verified with experimental data. The method utilizing the equivalent current loops and electrical images is proven to be applicable for calculating air gap flux distribution of such a system. The novel arrangement of permanent magnets is proposed from the analytical results to provide a fine positioning ability for the LSM system. This arrangement offers a LSM transportation system with two modes of operation. It can behave as a linear pulse motor with controlling multi-phase stator winding. Feasibility of the LSM system for the advanced transportation applications is verified through experimental data and analytical results.
