A comprehensive burst test survey was performed on the Nord Stream line pipes, encompassing the 4 wall thicknesses selected to meet Project Design Criteria and Design Pressure Segmentation as well. The objective of the test program was to provide support to decisions for line pipe material spec and performance qualification program. The test program, carried out by Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung (SZMF) in Duisburg, was backed by a series of engineering analysis with the aim to predict the burst pressure for each of the line pipes tested, using the available data regarding pipe geometry and stress - strain curve of the actual material. The finding of the burst test survey are the following: (1) Bursting occurred always at internal pressure far greater than the ones that can be calculated using the bursting limit state equation of DNV OS F101 2000 (a safe design!); (2) bursting Limit State Equations (BLSE) that can be found in literature provide satisfactory burst pressure estimation and a few of these are recommended as characterised by a bias about 1 and including the relevant strength parameters that influence the burst pressure, Zhu&Leis (2004) and Stewart, Klever, Ritchie (1994); (3) using the suitable BLSE does allow to make the best estimate, while a COV 3% can be found on available example results due to the variability (both circumferential and longitudinal) of the local strength of the pipe wall (local thickness distribution and local biaxial strength and deformation capacity), as the failure process is linked to the localization of the hoop deformation; (4) the analytical procedure developed to follow the test, based on simple functional relationship of relevant parameters from incremental plasticity theory, provides very good results when test line pipe data are available.
