The European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) defines standards for interoperability between the on-board train protection systems (ETCS) and the railway infrastructure. Part of this specification describes the computation of train braking curves and the associated train reactions according to its speed. This document explains how ERTMSFormalSpecs (EFS) has been used to model such braking curves and the associated advantages of traceability and understandability of using a domain-specific language as opposed to a more common specification-implementation process, where multiple stages of human interpretation and interaction increase the opportunities for errors.
