This paper presents conventional cabin power architectures on smaller civil aircraft and the weight savings which can be achieved with alternative aircraft architectures. The obtained results confirm the choice of using decentralised electrical architectures in order to reduce the cable weight of the electrical system. In addition, the adoption of higher voltage levels such as 230V AC or 270V DC can enhance the weight savings. Furthermore this weight savings can be increased by using decentralised architectures with local 28V DC conversions into the secondary distribution boxes. The investigations have been made with aluminium and composite material (CFRP) fuselages. Compared to aluminium, the introduction of composite materials as primary aircraft structures is disadvantageous from the point of view of electrical engineering. However CFRP fuselages can engender more overall weight savings than aluminium structures, when considering their direct potential savings in comparison with aluminium.
