It is necessary for SAIC Motor Technical Centre (SMTC) to develop a new type of gasoline engine with low fuel consumption, low exhaust emission and high performance to meet the wide variety of requirements of passenger vehicles in China, due to more stringent emission regulations and market demand for efficient and high performance engines. Comparing with the PFI engine, a centrally-installed injection GDI possesses more advantages and can be easily upgraded to adopt stratified charge DISI and HCCI to further reduce fuel consumption. This engine features numerous advanced technologies, such as a centrally-installed fuel injector, full Aluminium structure with bedplate, cross flow cooling concept, oilwater module, mass balance module on 2.4 l I4-verison and double cam phasing, to list only a few. It has been shown that CAE plays a key role in the engine design process. CAE provides a virtual design verification tool for sub-systems and components. With the support of CAE, the need for prototypes can be reduced, and quality and robustness can be improved. To support combustion development of the GDI engine, charge motion, mixture formation and oil dilution parameters are optimized by aid of CFD-tools. To assess intake ports and the geometry of the combustion chamber, in-cylinder flow analysis provides insight into tumble structure and turbulent energies. Engine cooling with an advanced cross-flow concept is optimized by detailed coolant flow simulation to meet the thermal and emission requirements. To meet NVH targets, acoustical behaviour of the engine structures and the behaviour of the assembled power train unit are optimized to ensure a stiff and quiet power train. Main engine components are analysed and improved by computing surface velocities in a force response analysis. Modal analysis for the completely assembled power train is conducted to investigate the natural frequencies of outer parts and power train bending and torsion.
