The increasing number of road accidents and fatalities, together with the legislation evolution on European level have made 'Road Safety' a major issue and the focus on Preventive Safety systems (ADAS) one of the priorities among trucks manufacturers, to which Iveco dedicates a strong commitment. Road accident analysis can help in understanding the traffic scenario and hence be provision of smart and technically effective solutions: Iveco safety activities leave from the examination of most common accidents involving commercial vehicles. Trucks dimensions, peculiar braking and evasion qualities can have as a result that critical situations develop into collisions more often than for passenger cars, with more serious injuries. The paper presents the results achieved and expected in the next years by Iveco in the development of preventive safety systems and, more importantly, to what extent they might contribute to reductions in accident rates. Additionally, in order to focus on the product and on the spread of preventive safety systems in a very competitive market, it should be kept in mind that truck operators are highly cost-conscious: as designers we can't help integrating strategies, interfaces, sensors and components. Such integration is actually essential to optimize the functions performance (strategies and interfaces are mutually connected and through proper logics give only the essential feedbacks) as well as the functions cost. It is in harmony with such logic that the paper presents some possible integration of ADAS for Heavy Commercial vehicles, in particular focusing on the Active Lane Assistant and Lane Change Assistant, resulting in enhanced performances. Well aware that the EC is explicitly recommending safe and efficient in-vehicle information and communication systems, the ADAS developments must comprehend the essential safe design and use aspects to be considered for the human machine interface (HMI): the Iveco integrated approach to the HMI design is therefore presented as part of the cognitive ergonomics discipline.
